Promoting active participation in role play by medical students in teaching communication skills

Why do students go silent when asked to role-play? And what changes when the instructor is the first to show that making mistakes is okay?

A conversation about role-play exercises as a tool for teaching medical communication – and about why student engagement depends not only on the method itself, but above all on the environment in which learning takes place. We talk about the fear of making mistakes, perfectionism, and the feeling of being evaluated that often keep students from participating, as well as the instructor’s role in creating a safe space where it’s possible to try, fail, and learn.

We discuss approaches that help make role-play exercises a living, effective learning tool: demonstrating “poor” communication, collectively searching for better phrasing, repeating exercises to build confidence, and working with students’ initial reactions. Special attention is given to post-exercise discussion and feedback as a space for reflecting on the impact of one’s own words and actions – and where real learning actually happens.
