The topic of mental health has once again become relevant for our country because we have a neighbor with imperial ambitions who continues to shell Ukraine massively.
That is why Mychailo Wynnytskyj, sociologist, trainer, and lecturer of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, host of the podcast, spoke with Orest Suvalo, psychiatrist, coordinator of community services development of the Ukrainian-Swiss project “Mental Health for Ukraine,” head of projects and programs of the Institute of Mental Health of the Ukrainian Catholic University, about mental health —> https://li.sten.to/j3bmqvzq.
Today, you will hear a talk about the competencies that doctors should have when working with mental health:
- Truth and myths about PTSD: what percentage of Ukrainians will have post-traumatic disorder due to the full-scale invasion of Russia?
- What is resilience, and how do we cope in difficult conditions?
- What experiences and traumas have we inherited from our ancestors?
- What mental disorders other than PTSD can Ukrainian men and women have, and how is this or that diagnosis established?
- What is the first psychological aid, who needs it, and when is it worth getting skills to provide such assistance?
- Why is it essential to implement mental health changes at the community level, and how does this process work?
- History and culture of Ukrainian psychiatry: is it true that we inherited only “punitive” psychiatry from the Soviet Union?
- How are human rights and mental health combined, and what discussions exist between psychiatrists and lawyers?
- What is multidisciplinarity in the mental health field, and what is the value of this approach?
In the podcast, the interlocutors mention the film “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” —> https://apple.co/3tGtZRH and the collection of articles “Ukrainian Medical Community and Society” —> https://bit.ly/3THPFYt.
At the end of the episode, you will find the section “What have you read there?!” or “Why do I need those books? I read the orders!” from Matviy Khrenov, co-founder of the Ukrainian Healthcare Center (UHC).
The author recommends reading the book “Blindsight” by Peter Watts. This novel is one of the author’s most famous works, immersing you in a fantastic journey. The story is written in the science fiction genre, containing elements of physics and astronomy. But the author did not stop there and went into psychology, exploring who a person is.
