We are sharing our impressions from participation in SPSIM 2022 conference

Oops, we forgot to share our impressions of the SPSIM conference “Standardized Patients and Simulation,” which took place in early September in Switzerland. This event was organized by the Lausanne University of Health Sciences and took place at the Lausanne University Hospital offline and online.
The project supported online participation at the conference of educators from four medical universities. It should be noted that the conference was held primarily for those who are already actively implementing the “standardized patient” method in their simulation centers to train and test the knowledge of medical specialists.
During the conference, it were discussed the scientific basis and best practices in the field of medical education using simulation and standardized patients: new directions for learning, teaching, and assessment were outlined, and patient safety was kept in focus.
We talked to Ukrainian colleagues who attended the conference. The most interesting topics for them were virtual learning, preparation for the role of standardized patients and simulation, and gamification in medical education. Conference speaker Daniel Tolks, a doctoral student at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Bielefeld in Germany, noted the role of gamification in medical education:
“Today, games remain an integral part of the culture, and approximately half of the population plays computer games at least occasionally. The range of topics of game approaches covers from serious games (use of games with pedagogical approach) to gamification (use of game elements in non-game concepts). Gamification improves motivation and contributes to achieving high results in learning. Turn simulations and tests into a game or add gamification, and you will have a good result”.
We share with you the insights of the conference participants:
- “Simulations as support for practical skills training, communication training, and complex team training in different areas of healthcare are an integral part of basic, undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing education. Today, formats vary from technical skills training to scenarios with standardized patient simulations, combined hybrid simulations, sophisticated mannequin simulations, and virtual and augmented reality. Even though more complex formats require more resources (budget, qualified specialists, training, and involvement of professional standardized patients), the positive experience of experts from Switzerland and Germany should be an inspiration and motivation for higher education institutions in Ukraine to develop the direction of simulation to the level of the best international standards of medical education.”
- “Simulation training is promising, interesting, and developing by leaps and bounds. It is only necessary to keep up with modern technologies and trends. We are glad that now at our university, we can give students the most effective classes and develop practically oriented skills, regardless of the situation’s limitations.”
- “I am happy that I was able to participate in one of the workshops and discuss with the participants the advantages and disadvantages of teaching standardized patients online, as well as develop solutions to the challenges of working with them online.”
We are pleased with the feedback from the participants and hope that representatives from Ukraine will attend the next conference offline!
