We will tell you how and why the Project team studies the educational environment in higher medical education institutions and the perception of family medicine by students and teachers.
On our page —> https://mededu.org.ua/library/, you will find published reports on the results of the research conducted by the Project team in 2019.
At that time, the research results on the assessment of the educational environment and perception of family medicine helped us and our partner universities determine which aspects of the educational environment at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels of medical education we should work on together. And also how to change students’ perception of family medicine during their university studies.
You can read more about the reports here:

During this time, we contributed to the development of medical universities’ capacity, improved teachers’ skills, introduced modern simulation technologies into the educational process, developed educational courses, in particular, on mastering students’ communication skills, and improved the course in family medicine.
Now we want to see if there have been any changes in our partner medical schools since 2019. Therefore, we are re-examining the educational environment of medical schools and measuring the perception of family medicine by students and teachers. We use the same tools, questionnaires, and research approaches to compare the data.
According to the Glossary of Education Reform, the educational environment is a concept that describes the variety of tasks, interactions, relationships, cultures, and contexts – physical, social, and pedagogical – that students experience during their studies.
So this month, the Project team, together with the pilot medical universities: Bukovinian State Medical University, Ternopil National Medical University, Kharkiv National Medical University, Lviv Medical Academy, Zhytomyr Medical Institute, Rivne Medical Academy, as well as other interested universities – NMU, UzhNU – are conducting three large-scale studies:
- Assessment of the undergraduate educational environment of medical universities (using the DREEM methodology),
- Assessment of the hospital postgraduate educational environment of medical universities (using the PHEEM methodology),
- Measuring the perception of family medicine by students and teachers of medical universities.
The Project team visits universities, institutes, and academies and meets with students, interns, and teachers to get answers to the questionnaires that will help assess the components of the educational environment:
- perception of the educational process and interaction with teachers,
- academic performance,
- the social component of education,
- factors that influence the attitude to family medicine as a profession.
More than 1000 students and teachers have already expressed their opinion, which is extremely important for us!
We look forward to the results, as such data helps us make informed decisions to improve medical education in Ukraine.
