In February, we had an exciting event dedicated to the points of contact between medical education and practical medicine.
During the event, we created a platform for interaction. We facilitated a dialogue between the participants: educators of medical universities, authors of educational programs, practitioners, heads of healthcare institutions, and employers.
The discussions were heated as we focused on human capital in healthcare. We examined whether the education and practical skills acquired by medical graduates meet the needs of patients, the professionalism of expert practitioner nurses, and the expectations of employers. We found out at what stage of education – undergraduate, postgraduate, CPD – doctors and nurses acquire relevant competencies and what they are. And also what role educational and healthcare institutions play in this.
Key topics:
- Reconstruction, building, or development? Post-war agenda.
- Education of doctors and nurses today and in 10 years.
- How we, our employees, and our institutions have changed during the war.
- Development of educational trajectories of doctors and nurses.
- Continuous development of professional skills and soft skills.
We also presented our approach to curriculum, which we will continue to implement until the end of the first phase of our project and develop in the next phase. We want to remind you that a curriculum is not just an educational plan that contains a list of subjects and their scope. It is a vision of what future graduates should be, transformed into an educational program. Medical universities should include in the curriculum primarily the competencies that doctors or nurses need to start their professional careers.
Therefore, the event contributed to a common understanding of what competencies medical graduates should have and what educators should include in the curriculum to prepare graduates for practice. We are pleased that we managed to create a space for an essential dialogue on the comprehensiveness of future graduates’ training and values.
We would also like to remind you of our excellent guide that you can read and apply in your own practice → https://bit.ly/40HqcC3.
The event was organized jointly with the Ukrainian Healthcare Centre (UHC).
