Masterclass nurses “Supporting Patients During Recovery”

On 12–13 February in Zhytomyr, nurses from the pilot facilities of the project “Advanced Nurse Practitioner in the Primary Health Care, with our support, took part in the practical training session in order to practise skills in caring for patients during their recovery.  

The masterclass was a logical continuation of a series of webinars during which nurses from our pilot facilities had studied the theory. These online sessions focused on understanding the role of a nurse, the scope of their competence, and patient support. Thus, during the in-person session, the nurses were able to concentrate on practising practical skills, analysing clinical situations, and applying tools in real-life cases.  

The format included parallel sessions in small groups, analysis of clinical cases, role plays, and practising action algorithms ranging from independent interventions to identifying ‘red flags’ and keeping records.  

The topics included: assessing the condition of post-stroke patients, screening for lymphoedema, managing complications following breast surgery, and exercises for pain in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. 

The training was delivered by the experts from the Vidnovlennia Medical Centre who work daily with patients following strokes, cancer treatments, and injuries. This was evident in the quality of the material, and the participants noticed it. 

“We gained a lot of information that was genuinely new to us and even more practical skills that we will definitely use in our work. What’s more, it’s very rare to meet people who are truly passionate about their work. Everyone who taught us over these two days was exactly like that,” said one of the participants. 

After the masterclass, the participants took away specific action algorythms, assessment scales, and practical recommendations for their day-to-day work. But that’s not all! For many, the event marked a step towards greater confidence in their role within the team and in the patients’ recovery process.
