On 9\u201310 November, a two-day workshop titled “Basics of Cybersecurity for Medical HEIs” took place in Ivano-Frankivsk, organised by the Ukrainian-Swiss project “Development of Medical Education” in partnership with the State Service for Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine. The event brought together IT specialists, administrators of educational platforms, and digitalisation managers of medical higher education institutions (HEIs) to explore accessible practical solutions and build basic digital protection monitoring.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The main goal of the workshop was to help medical HEIs form a realistic, incident-resistant cybersecurity model, in which the team clearly understands what exactly needs to be monitored, how to quickly notice suspicious activity on the network and workstations, and how to make informed management decisions based on the logs and metrics collected.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Trokhym Babych, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Informatics at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and workshop instructor, structured the sessions so that participants worked with real-life attack cases, examined typical mistakes made at medical HEIs, and learned to build a simple but effective monitoring system using free tools.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Vitalii Zaiets, Digitalisation Coordinator of our project, shared his takeaways from the workshop and the audience’s feedback: “For many participants, this workshop became a point of ‘optical switching’: from expecting perfect protection to understanding that real cybersecurity begins with basic monitoring, logs, and the ability to notice anomalies in time. It is especially valuable that participants are already planning concrete steps after the workshop: implementing network and service monitoring, strengthening website security, deploying log collection tools, and preparing well-reasoned plans for management (and even ‘overcoming the resistance of the accounting department’ \u2014 a quote that has become my favourite). In the comments, we see a lot of simple but very illustrative wording such as: ‘I understood where to start’, ‘I got the necessary basis’, ‘now I see how to put it into practice’. For me, as a digitalisation coordinator, this means one thing: the workshop did not remain theory, but became the starting point for real changes at medical HEIs.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
