Today, interns must gain professional experience under appropriate guidance. They should learn to ask the right questions and constantly seek answers to them, become part of the internal medical corporate culture of the institution and transmit relevant values. During the eighth issue of the marathon of medical education together with the speakers we are discussing who should help young professionals at the stage of their professional development.
“Internatura is a stage of professional development of a specialist in a particular medical speciality. This is the way of development and formation of professionals, because it is more practical training. Internatura is a stage of work, acquisition of practical experience and skills. In particular, gaining experience in communicating with patients, diagnosis. Internatura is about asking questions and finding answers under the guidance of someone more experienced, with his help and support,” said Mladena Kachurets, Deputy Minister of Health (2019), adviser to the acting Minister of Health (2016-2019), Director of the Department of Development and Training of Dobrobut Medical Network.
The learning process aims to develop autonomy for future medical professionals. Therefore, it is important to create appropriate conditions for interns that will promote their autonomy. “As the head of the internatura base, I can say that such conditions are the attitude towards the work of the intern and his tasks. If we formally approach interns, and it operates exclusively within its program, we will never achieve autonomy. First, the intern should be treated like a colleague. He should be involved in professional work not as an observer, but as an active participant in the process. Secondly, we need people who will help the intern to develop his professional behavior,” said Oleksiy Rykov, medical director of pediatrics at the Dobrobut medical clinics.
During the internatura, mentors play an important role for future medical workers. The course for mentors in internatura, implemented by the Ukrainian-Swiss project “Medical Education Development” together with the Dobrobut Academy and the Dobrobut Medical Network, was created to show what mentoring should be like. By the way, very soon we will publish the course materials for everyone, so stay tuned.
“As a participant of the course, I want to express my admiration. I didn’t expect him to be like that. This course changed my world-view and perception of how to communicate with interns. I managed to gain a lot of important information, which I also use in communication with young workers who have less than a year of working experience,” said Ilga Remizova, a methodologist, pediatrician at the Mykhailivska Multidisciplinary Hospital.
It is important that the attitude of mentors towards interns translates to the peer-to-peer position. Therefore, communication should be the same as with equal colleagues. “My supervisor became my mentor. I know that I can ask her for advice at any time, she will never refuse. Of course, this does not mean that I can disturb her at any time, but the support is strongly felt,” commented the intern of Dobrobut medical network, Oleksandr Belko.
Internatura is important not only for students and mentors, but also for training bases. They should also be interested in merging new employees who have mastered the “right culture”. “How to find an employee who will be well-prepared and will profess the values that a certain institution and team professes? Internatura for the training base always gives a chance to find good specialists, get the necessary help for the medical team. And foremost, this is the stage of merging new specialists,” Mladena shared.
Thus, the formation of young professionals during internatura under supervision of mentors is a magical formula for success. “Internatura and quality of training are very important. Mentorship as a phenomenon should be present in the process of training both interns and young doctors,” sums up Sergii Ubogov, Director of the Directorate of Medical Personnel, Education and Science of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
