Capacity building of pilot institutions of higher medical education

Each of these components is important for ensuring the quality of medical education and improving the quality of medical care in Ukraine. The main result of the joint efforts of the project and the pilot HEIs is a graduate who, completing his / her studies in HEIs, is a qualified specialist in his / her field who is ready to respond patriotically, honestly and transparently to modern healthcare challenges and provide quality care. Ukrainians.

  • Continuing professional development of teachers is no less important than continuous professional development of doctors. Mastering modern approaches in curriculum development, understanding and implementing a competency-based approach to learning, student-centered learning, mastering modern learning technologies, including e-learning and distance learning – all this is the key to quality education of medical professionals, to which we go together. In 2020, a series of trainings on teaching skills in medical HEIs was launched, the first of which took place online in May-June 2020 on feedback. and the second in October 2020 (initiation of peer groups in medical education).

  • Research grants
  • Conducting research is an integral part of the development of a modern institution of higher education and professional development of teachers, as well as forming an international ranking of free educational institutions. Our support is to help conduct qualitative research that will have an impact on increasing the evidence in the field of family medicine, and at the same time, will promote the development of research skills of the scientific and pedagogical staff of the Higher education institutions.

  • E-learning
  • The project conducts training for representatives of pilot e-learning freelancers, and has also started testing the e-learning system in one of the institutions. Therefore, we will be able to pilot solutions, identify key barriers and successful solutions in the test implementation, and better disseminate this experience in other institutions. Based on the fact that the pilot higher educational institutions have a different starting point in the context of e-learning – the next steps will be individual.

  • Clinical skills laboratories
  • Filling the simulation center with equipment directly depends on what practical skills future doctors and future family doctors or nurses need to acquire. To equip the Laboratories of Clinical Skills (simulation centers) in accordance with the needs of the educational process, a Working Group on the competencies of primary care providers was established. Review of competencies is important both for updating curricula and for reviewing the division of responsibilities in the primary. Having received the list of competencies of primary care providers, we will be able to start developing scenarios for the development of practical skills and compile a list of equipment for your practical skills laboratories together with the pilot higher educational institutions.

  • Competences and curriculum
  • Kurilkula is not just a curriculum, which contains a list of disciplines and their scope. According to Apple, the curriculum is an ideological message that also expresses values, beliefs and aspirations. The curriculum reflects the institution’s view of the profession, as well as describes how best to create the next generation of professionals. This new concept and approach is reflected in the accreditation requirements of educational programs developed by NAME. Currently, 5 workshops are planned in this direction, the first two of which will take place online.

  • Educational environment
  • In 2019, a monitoring study of the educational environment of the higher educational institution ( at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels ) was conducted. The results of the study revealed aspects that need improvement. In response to this challenge, we have already conducted the first online training for teachers on the ability to provide feedback and are planning a series of seminars (on facilitation, student-centered approaches to learning, competency approach, discussing the possibility of creating psychological support centers for students – these all topics will later be planned and implemented in the format of trainings for teachers).

  • English for teachers
  • The language of modern medical science is English. The latest medical advice, guidelines and systematic reviews are published in English. Therefore, a qualified physician must know English and use English-language sources to update their knowledge. Therefore, in order to develop the professional competencies of teachers, English language courses were introduced in all pilot higher educational institutions during the academic year 2019-2020 and they will be continued in the 2020-2021 academic year.

  • Communication of the institution inside and out
  • Communication is a prerequisite for change. Any decision, innovation is preceded by communication. Communication is integrated in most processes. Thus, the organization – forms through communication a community that is committed to goals and values, as well as identifies ways and formats to achieve social goals. Communication strategy and its implementation is a must have. It defines the external and internal target audience, well-thought-out communication channels and “wrapper” of messages – this is what will create a unique, unique, dynamic image of modern freelance.

  • Study tours abroad and in Ukraine
  • The project plans stages for the administration and coordinators of the higher educational institution to study the experience of foreign colleagues in building laboratories of practical skills, curriculum review, implementation of a competency approach, study the experience of implementing the extended role of a primary care nurse.

  • Values and quality improvement
  • Understanding the values of the profession, institution, society and the ability to transmit priority values in the institution for all participants in the educational process is an important component of the success of the institution, as well as positioning in relation to the landscape of educational services.

  • Humanity and Empathy
  • For a long time, the Ukrainian healthcare system has been existing in a paradigm of treating diseases, not humans. This system does not consider a patient as a subject, with their feelings and needs, and produces distrust. Both medical personnel and patients with their families suffer from a hostile hospital environment. How to communicate with patients and make them partners, deal with difficult situations, and deliver bad news without burning out? The `Humanity and Empathy in Health Care` handbook is the first Ukrainian publication for medical professionals help to add humanity to educating healthcare workers and treating patients.
